Maths Intent

Number: To identify where maths is used in the real world and to all areas of maths. To understand place value of numbers and compare, order, estimate and round numbers including non whole numbers/parts of a whole number. To develop and broaden language of maths using correct terms – to use standard methods and developing strategies for mental maths, multiplication tables. Making some clear links with money and number, measure, data.

Continual linking between learned knowledge and skills and the real world application and problem solving.

 

Stage Knowledge/Skills
Stage 14

To manage own finances. Travel independently using timetable and time awareness.  Understand effectively using measures for cooking, shopping etc. Read information represented in a mathematical way.  Apply analytical skills and application skills for everyday work and life problems. Understand where money comes from, how we earn it. Apply understanding consistently of spatial awareness.

Stage 13

Money management and awareness of everyday costs/earnings. Be able to apply understanding of telling time and amount and difference in time (relating to how long it takes to do something, how much time before an event) everyday functional situations.  Read and interpret mathematical information and problem solve to support everyday living – eg savings v costs.  Use spatial awareness across a broad range of situations.

Stage 12

Using money for life.  Understand time differences (e.g. 1 hour more than 30 minutes). Relating and understanding different units of measure to a broad range of situations in real life. Read and interpreted their own personal timetable and daily skills information in order to organise their day effectively and accurately.  Understanding spatial awareness in everyday situations.

Stage 11

Using money for everyday transactions.  Using digital and analogue time, using clocks, watches, timers on cookers/equipment. To be able to use different units of measurements and convert between units of measure.  Understand the purpose of a timetable.

Stage 10

Calculate using money and time. Calculate using measure, being able to persevere with maths tasks.  Read a timetable. Use mathematical language to explain your needs using correct math vocab/terms.  Increasing knowledge of how to formally record mathematics.

Stage 9

Apply greater resilience to solving more complex everyday problems involving mathematical understanding.  To be able to interpret and apply the correct strategy to situations that require a mathematical approach.

Stage 8

To have developed a practical mathematical approach to solving problems which require a process.  Choosing the correct mathematical strategies and applying them at each step.

Stage 7

Begin to reason and solve simple one step number and practical problems which occur in everyday situations (time, measures and shape and space) using larger whole numbers.

Stage 6

To have knowledge of a range of mathematical strategies both mental and written required to solve mathematical problems which may also involve a multiple of an amount.

Stage 5

To develop strategies using mathematical calculations both mental and written methods where addition and subtraction is needed and to begin to record these.

Stage 4

Start to understand the value of number through direct comparison across a variety of contexts (identifying math in multiple of environments), identifying and talking about more and less, add, take away and ordering numbers  using a range of objects/resources. Awareness of early mathematical language across all areas of math and begin to talk about and use language appropriately in every day conversations and environments.

Stage 2

To experience and engage with a range of number rich resources to engage with practically and to talk and identify number in a variety of contexts/experiences. To start to use simple mathematical language when exploring and experiencing maths. Addition and subtraction practical understanding

Stage 1

Awareness of objects, have fun with number, colour, shapes, patterns through games, songs and rhymes. Understand you can have an amount and awareness of different objects.
